In July 1783, General George Washington, with a small staff, came over the Military Road on a survey of the army points in the North country, especially old Saratoga, Fort Edward, Fort George, and Ticonderoga. Now that the war was over, Washington wished to see the places which the Commander-in-Chief had known only from maps and reports from his generals in the field.
