Saturday Quote

Ben Wade: You ever read the bible, Dan? I read it one time. I was eight years old. My daddy just got hisself killed over a shot of whiskey and my mama said “we’re going back East to start over”. So she gave me a bible, sat me down in the train station, told me to read it. She was gonna get our tickets. Well, I did what she said. I read that bible from cover to cover. It took me three days. She never came back.

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:

”Take only ONE. God is watching.”

Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.

A child had written a note, “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”

What Are You Doing This Off-Season?

A picture taken before the start of Game 4 of the National League Playoffs between the Pirates and Cardinals from PNC Park in Pittsburgh. (Click to see full-scale.)

No, I’m not in Pittsburgh. However, I did receive this shot from my nephew who is at today’s game. It made me think that I’m going to start a new series of posts entitled, What are you doing this off-season?

If you’re some place fun or interesting, send me a picture, and I might post it. I know lots of people who go interesting places and see fun events when they’re not in Huletts. So if you’re doing something fun this off-season, send me a picture and let your friends see the excitement here on the Huletts Current.

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Luke Smith

Mr. & Mrs. Luke Smith at the Whitehall Athletic Club after getting married on Saturday.

Congratulations to Luke Smith and Melissa Donaldson who were married on Saturday at the Whitehall Athletic Club.

Many relatives and friends of the large Smith and Donaldson families were able to attend. The happy couple exchanged their vows from the balcony overlooking the main hall of the Whitehall Athletic Club and a lively and fun reception followed. The dance floor was filled with members of the bridal party, family and friends.

The sun shined brightly throughout the afternoon and the after-party continued into the night at the Huletts Casino where the couple made a spectacular entrance by golf cart.

Many wishes for a happy and healthy future go out to the Smith’s as they continue their lives together.

Berry/Clayton Wedding Takes Place in Huletts

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Clayton arrive at the Huletts Casino for their reception after getting married in the Mountain Grove Memorial Church on Saturday.

Sometimes dreams do come true.

Growing up, Annie Berry always wanted to get married in Huletts. Well that’s what happened on Saturday as she and Tommy Clayton were married in the Mountain Grove Memorial Church. Helen Marie Sunkenberg officiated at the wedding ceremony and the reception followed in the Casino.

It was a joyous ceremony and lively reception. The band “Grand Central Station” delighted the crowd throughout the evening and the bride’s entire family did a patriotic rendition of the song, God Bless America.

It was a day of family, friends, good times, and a lot of love. It was a Huletts day through and through.

The bride’s parents, Ann and Doug Berry, rejoice in their daughter’s big day.

The bride’s grandfather, Bill Harriman, stands with a guest during the reception.

Guests enjoyed the beautiful weather outside.

A fun reminder at the entrance of the Casino.

The inside of the Casino was decorated to perfection.

Some of the “flowers” were made out of colored paper.

A fun idea: leave a thumbprint and your name on the “guest” tree.

Flip-flops kept the dance party going.

The band, Grand Central Station, rocked the crowd.

The Baseball Player Made a Short Stop

Washington Nationals infielder, Jeff Kobernus, signs an autograph for Margot Kapusinski.

My brother, Frank, along with his wife, Doreen, and daughter, Margot, were in Washington D.C. recently and passed along this photo of Margot getting an autograph. The Washington Nationals have a promotion on Sundays where the players come into the stands to sign autographs. What a great idea for fans young and old!

Saturday Quote

This is a short story which floats around the Internet in different variations. While its been debunked as being untrue, it nevertheless is a funny little reminder on the importance of humility.

In the darkest part of the night, a warship plowed through fog-shrouded waters. With straining eyes, the Admiral on deck scanned the hazy darkness, searching for dangers lurking just out of sight.

Then his worst fears were realized when he saw a bright light straight ahead. It appeared to be a vessel on a collision course with his ship. To avert disaster he quickly radioed the oncoming vessel.

“This is Admiral Smith,” his voice crackled over the radio. “Please alter your course 10 degrees south! Over.”

To the Admirals amazement, the foggy image did not move. Instead, he heard back on the radio, “Admiral Smith. This is Seaman First Class Johnson. please alter your course 10 degrees north! Over.”

Appalled at the audacity of the message, the Admiral shouted back over the radio, “Seaman First Class Johnson, this is Admiral Smith, and I order you to immediately alter your course 10 degree south! Over.”

A second time the oncoming light did not budge. “With all due respect Admiral Smith,” came the voice again, “I order you to alter your course immediately 10 degrees north! Over.”

Angered and frustrated that this impudent sailor would endanger the lives of his men and crew, the Admiral growled back over the radio, “Seaman Johnson. I can have you court-marshaled for this! For the last time, I command you to alter your course 10 degrees to the South! I am a battleship!”

The lowly Seaman held firm; “Admiral Smith, sir. Once again with all due respect, I command you to alter your course 10 degrees to the North! I am a lighthouse!”

Off-Season Work Continues

Some people don’t know the amount of off-season work that goes on in Huletts. This past week the barroom floor of the Casino was redone.
